dc.description | Note: Before the Viaduct was completed in 1918, the valley was a significant barrier to the eastward expansion of the city—the most northerly crossing within the city limits being the small bridge at Winchester Street. Named for Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), who visited Toronto for the first time in 1918, the Prince Edward Viaduct was initially very controversial. To Toronto residents at the time, access to the sparsely populated Danforth area didn’t justify the bridge’s $2,500,000 price tag. City residents turned down two proposals for bridge construction before finally approving the plans in January 1913. | en |
